ABOUT

Coding Together is a 2-week summer camp designed to teach 25 girls in grades 5-9 fundamental skills in computer science.

Mission Statement: Program leader Michelle Qin's mission was to inspire girls to pursue passions for STEM and computing by developing an engaging, rigorous, and supportive curriculum and community. Oh- and have fun!

Camp Highlights

  • Michelle Qin, student at the Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy, taught 25 students how to use Scratch, TinkerCad (Computer 3D Modeling), and robot programming

  • listened to guest speaker presentations from UCSB Computer Science Professor Diba Mirza, Jim Soriano from Dell, Jennifer and Keele from Raytheon, and Samantha from GraphIQ.

  • presentations by high school students from the Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy who brought in the projects that they engineered

  • at the end of the program, students made projects designed to tackle a social or environmental problem using the skills that they learned (e.g. students made informative projects on women's rights, programmed a robot to help guide a blind person, designed a 3D prosthetic arm on the computer, and created games to teach people how to recycle properly).

  • students had the opportunity to print out their own custom-made 3D designs from TinkerCad using a 3D printer

  • learned computer science through hands-on activities like the binary magic trick

  • watched the inspiring movie, Hidden Figures

  • gained teamwork skills in activities like the Marshmallow Challenge

  • made friends and created a community of students, adults, and professionals dedicated to empowering girls in computer science

FAQs for Coding Together

What is the program cost?
The cost per camper is $50. This covers snacks and materials.

How can I request a scholarship?
To request a scholarship, click here.  We do not want financial hardships to deter anyone from applying. Decisions for the scholarships will be sent in the following weeks.

Who is the program for?
The program is designed for students going into grades 5 - 11 in the fall of 2017. We encourage participants from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds to register.

Does my daughter need prior experience in coding before joining the program?
Not at all! This program is designed for those who have little to no prior experience in coding. We will be teaching the basic, fundamental skills to coding, so it should not be overwhelming to any participant. Additionally, we will have high school volunteers and adult mentors (Dr. Diba Mirza of UCSB Computer Science Dept.) who are willing to help!

Where is the program being held?
The program is held in Dos Pueblos High School's computer lab, room T-10. For the school map, click here.

What does my daughter need to bring?
Lunch. We provide everything else for the program, including computers and snacks.

Who should I contact if I have more questions?
Michelle Qin is the primary leader for the program. You can reach her at [email protected] or (805) 886-6285.
